David Wroe

A native of Great Britain, David Wroe is Music Director of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra, the Resident Orchestra of Union County, New Jersey.  Increasingly in demand as a guest conductor, he was on the podium of the newly formed Fresno International Grand Opera for their production of La Bohème last September.  Recent guest conducting engagements include his debut at the Santa Fe Symphony, OperaDelaware, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Wayne Chamber Orchestra, and L’Orchestre National de Lille (France).  Known to have extensive experience as an operatic conductor, Maestro Wroe was invited to Judge the Metropolitan Opera National Council - New Jersey Regional Auditions last spring. 

In July 1999 he completed his contract as Principal Conductor at the City Opera of Heidelberg.  Maestro Wroe’s opera credits include La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Fidelio, Amadis (J.C.Bach), Merry Wives of Windsor, Arabella, Entführung, Ariadne auf Naxos, and La Forza del destino.  He has initiated an Opera in Concert series with his Westfield Symphony Orchestra.  Repertoire performed includes Porgy and Bess, Hansel and Gretel, Madama Butterfly, and next season, Le nozze di Figaro.

Additional credits are many and impressive including the recently held positions as Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Kansas City Camerata.  Orchestras conducted include the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, New York City Ballet, L’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, L’Orchestre Lamoureux, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, the Quad-City Symphony Orchestra, the Des Moines Symphony, the Wayne Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonische Orchester der Stadt Heidelberg, and the Symphonie Orchester Vorarlberg at the Bregenz Frühlings Festival in Austria.

In addition, he has toured Europe with the Boston Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, and served as cover conductor for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.  In 1998, he conducted a benefit concert featuring Mstislav Rostropovitch as soloist in the presence of Madame Chirac at the Théatre du Châtelet, Paris.

Maestro Wroe devotes considerable time to the musical education of young people, and played a prominent role in the Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerts.  In the 2000-2001 season he will begin a new position as Director of Orchestra studies at Montclair State University, N.J.  He has taught and given master-classes at both the New England Conservatory, and Harvard University, and has served as Judge for the Music Assistance Fund administered by the American Symphony Orchestra League. 

David was a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where, in 1992, he received the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship.  In 1995 David Wroe was recognized in the United States Congress as a recipient of US Sprint’s Up and Comer’s Award for his excellence in contributing to the community in Kansas City.  Also in that year he was a finalist in the 1st Bernstein International Conducting Competition.

Mr. Wroe attended Lancing College, has a Bachelor of Music from Manchester University (England), a Masters of Music from Northwestern (Chicago), and was a student of internationally renowned teacher Gustav Meier.
