JOSEF SUK |
Josef Suk was born to a career of which many artists only dare to dream. Grandson of Josef Suk the famous Czech composer and member of the Bohemian String Quartet, and great-grandson of Antonin Dvorak, he quickly found his place as one of the world's most distinguished musicians. Since then he has played everywhere in the world, recognised always as a violinist and musician of the deepest musicianship and the highest skill. His repertoire has always been based on the great European traditions, but he is also well known as a leading interpreter of contemporary works.
Suk is unusual in the world of super-star soloists in having remained an outstanding chamber musician. He was still a student when he became leader of the Prague Quartet; in 1951 he formed the now-famous Suk Trio; the trio with Julius Katchen and Janos Starker is also very well remembered; a distinguished violist too (he has recorded the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante as violist with lona Brown and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for Decca) he has played and recorded often with his friends the Smetana Quartet.
Josef Suk has made numerous recordings, especially for Decca, EMI and Supraphon. He is a six-times winner of the French Grand Prix du Disque, and winner of the Edison Prize and the coveted Wiener Flotenuhr.
