The extraordinary pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque are known not
only for the seamless ensemble of their playing, but also for their superlative
musicianship and extraordinary scope of repertoire which ranges from Bach,
Mozart and Schubert to Stravinsky, Gershwin, Bernstein and the avant-garde
composers of the 20th century.
They have performed with the world's finest orchestras including the
Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland,
Concertgebouw, Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, London Symphony, Los
Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Philharmonia and
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras. They have collaborated with conductors such as
Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, Jesus
Lopez-Cobos, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Simon Rattle, Giuseppe Sinopoli,
Leonard Slatkin and Michael Tilson Thomas.
In recital, their appearances have taken them to the world's most
prestigious festivals including Berlin, Blossom, City of London, Edinburgh,
Great Woods, Hollywood Bowl, the Proms, Mostly Mozart, Ravinia, Salzburg-Mozart
Woche and Tanglewood. They also appear regularly on television, including
projects for ZDF Germany, NHK Japan and several networks in the USA. A BBC-TV
documentary produced by Tamasin Day-Lewis featuring their lives and career was
screened in the UK in October 1992, and Sony Classical have produced a videodisc
- "The Loves of Emma Bardac".
Among their many recordings for Philips and Sony are Gershwin's Rhapsody in
Blue, Brahms' Hungarian Dances, Mozart's Double and Triple Concertos with the
Berlin Philharmonic and Semyon Bychkov, Poulenc's Double Concerto with the
Boston Symphony and Osawa, the Double Concertos of Mendelssohn and Bruch with
the Berlin Philharmonic and Semyon Bychkov, a disc dedicated to Spanish music
and another to Russian music based on original transcriptions, as well as "West
Side Story" and "Love of Colours" which is a collection of
contemporary jazz pieces.
They recorded last October the Luciano Berio Concerto for two pianos
under the direction of the composer with the La Scala Philharmonic, and have
since then completed a recording dedicated to the original works of Debussy for
four hands and two pianos.
Katia and Marielle Labèque are involved in a project for the
Rainforest Foundation with Trudie Styler and Sting, and will again participate
in their annual gala at Carnegie Hall with Viktoria Mullova, James Galway,
Evelyn Glennie, Misha Maisky, Gary Karr, Richard Stoltzman and Bobby McFerrin.
Katia Labèque has also recorded an album of duos for Dreyfus Records - "Little
Girl Blue" -with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul, Gonzalo
Rubalcaba and Michel Camilo amongst others.
